Lillie Davis lives her life by the Golden Rule, to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. For more than 21 years, she has been a volunteer with the Senior Companion Program, serving more than 24,000 hours.
An Alabama native, Lillie graduated from R.B Hudson High School in Selma and attended Madam C.J. Walker Beauty School in Kansas City, Mo. Eight years later, Lillie returned to Selma where she was a licensed cosmetologist for 40 years. After retirement, Lillie moved to Clyde Williams Terrance Apartments, a senior community in Fairfield, Ala., where she first heard about the Senior Companion Program. “Being a volunteer has been a wonderful learning experience,” she explains.
The mother of four children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren received the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2016. This prestigious award recognizes U.S. citizens and lawfully admitted permanent residents of the U.S. who have achieved the required number of hours of service over a 12-month period or cumulative hours over the course of a lifetime.
