RSVP Volunteer Opportunities

UAB Highlands (SPOONS) – Assist patients and families on the ACE (Acute Care for Elders) unit during meal times. Help ranges from feeding a patient to encouraging them to eat.

Alabama Veterans Memorial Park – Greet and direct visitors. Help with special events.

Alacare Home Health & Hospice – Call to talk and check on hospice patients. Provide respite for Care givers and light clerical duties

Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama – Participate in this organizations special events throughout the year (Walk/Run in Nov., Night golf tournament, Candle Lighting Service, Thanksgiving Arbor).

American Diabetes Association – Assist with periodic mail-outs and special events.

American Red Cross – Register and assist with blood drives. Help with disaster relief and community education.

AWARE Program – Make follow-up calls to clients looking for employment to determine their progress in finding a job.

  • Data Entry- Keying in records of phone calls or emails of the program participants.
  • Follow Up Caller- Placing calls to participants on job leads.( Script will be provided)
  • Computer Assistant- Helping assists participants with filling out applications on line.


Bay Area Food Bank- (SNAP Program) Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program-Volunteers are needed in the office twice a week for two to four hours to help with follow-up phone calls to applicants and scanning and copying documents and applications. Patience and a clear speaking voice are important because many of our phone calls are made to seniors.

Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum-Help during special museum events, work during races and throughout the year. Volunteers are needed to oversee and help direct visitors through self tour.

Better Basics – Reading activities with 2nd and 4th graders in participating Birmingham and Jefferson County Schools. Assist during the annual 1 day” Birmingham Reads” event in April.

  • Reading Mentors: Reading Mentors read with an elementary-school age child once a week during the school day, providing valuable individual practice for the child and an incredible opportunity to build a lasting relationship! The extra practice and individual attention often provide the extra boost to help the child improve skills and confidence! The program requires a once a week commitment during the school year, October-April. Materials and training are provided!


Birmingham Airport – Greeter “Ambassador” to help travelers navigate the airport terminal.

Birmingham Children’s Theatre – Usher (during the school year) children in/out of performances. Help with seating

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute – Greet visitors/assist with exhibits/conduct tours.

Birmingham Museum of Art – Greeters at the galleries and information desk. Tour guides.

Birmingham Towers- Front Door Clerk- Work front entrance of building making sure that all visitors sign in and ID’s are checked.

Birmingham Urban League – Answer the phone and light clerical duties.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens- Volunteer as:

  • Discovery Field Trip- To work with schooled aged children teaching hands on approach that will connect them with nature.
  • Garden Docent- Working with the school aged children on topics based on life science related to plants and the environment. ( 2 Mornings per month from 9:15-11:45)
  • Garden Propagation- Assisting in the planting of seeds in the garden.
  • Fall Plant Sale- This is a (3 day event) from October 16-18, Volunteers are needed to work as cashier, Loading Zone, Hospitality room, set up for event and plant sales.
  • Antique In the Gardens- This is a (3 day event) Volunteers are needed as the Main entrance clicker, front entrance ticket taker, Lobby coffee hostess, Schedule guide.


Children’s Hospital – Volunteer as:

  • Greeter (Greet and take visitors to appropriate locations)
  • Nursing Ambassador-(assisting the nurses on an assigned floor with keeping kitchen area clean and stocked and assisting the children with Baths, Dressing, Feeding and companionship with long term patients)
  • Patient Pal(Working with the children in the waiting area)
  • Tutors( Assist with Reading and lesson plans)


 Christian Service Mission – Volunteers may work:

  • Sorting (items that are donated)
  • Community Garden-(help to facilitate and cultivate gardens in assigned communities)
  • Construction (helping a trained professional build or repair houses)
  • Tutoring (working in assigned schools with students in a reading program)


 Collat Jewish Family Services- CARES Program (Caring for Adults through Respite, Enrichment & Socialization)

  • Socialize with “clients” by talking and playing games.
  • Music (play piano, guitar, etc)


Crisis Center UWCA – Trained as a “counselor” to take calls from people in crisis.

Disability Rights and Resources – Help build ramps for people with disabilities. Building materials provided.

Easter Seals of Birmingham – Answer phones, greet/direct visitors. Clerical Duties

Family Care Center Adult Day Care-  Arts and Crafts Assistant- To assist clients in the preparation of arts and crafts.

Family Guidance Center- Clerical- The office is looking for a volunteer to answer the phone.

Fox 6 Call for Action/WBRC – Take initial calls from individuals to document/resolve problems, (some computer skills are needed).

Gentiva/Odyssey Hospice – Make “tuck-in” calls to clients for the weekend and light clerical duties Medical Records Filing- Filing records for the agency.

Jefferson County Child Development Center- Looking for office help, Light Clerical work answering the phones and Help to put packages together- M-F 9-12 or any available time that you have.

Jefferson Co. Council on Aging – Meals on Wheels- driver. Delivering meals to homebound seniors.

Jefferson County EMA – Participate in Community Awareness Day event in October.

Jefferson County Jail – Literacy tutoring and GED preparation with adults.

JCCEO/ Wylam- Adult Day Health Care program is in need of Senior Companion to assist with client that is legally blind.

  • Chaperone- To accompany clients on field trips.
  • Activity Coordinator- assists clients with arts and crafts.


Keep Birmingham Beautiful – Trained to conduct seminars on: environmental awareness, beautification, recycling. Help with mail-outs. Distribute supplies/souvenirs.

Love Lady Center – Mentor or tutor women/children.

Literacy Council -  A Tutor that will work with seniors to provide assistance to those that struggle with reading. Training will be provided.

McCoy Older Adult Day Care – Visit and assist clients with activities, also volunteer doing arts and crafts with clients

My Father’s House Foundation- Mentor- Commit to mentor and support foster Care/dependency youth.

Samford University - or help with classes at on independent living skills

Norwood Resource Center - light office duties; answering the phones, greeting the guests, assisting with the application process also nightly closing of the facility. Volunteers may help with the community gardens in the Norwood Community.

Senior Talk Line UWCA – Call homebound seniors from the United Way building to check on their well being.    

St. Vincent’s East – Clerical duties and patient education.

Sloss Furnace - Light clerical at the front desk as well as help in the bookstore

  •  Touring- On Saturdays explaining the history of the plant.
  •  Legal Advisor- Someone with legal experience- to help with contracts and entertainment


Three Hots and A Cot - Help with the clothes pantry, volunteers will sort clothing.

United Way of Central Alabama – Light clerical duties. Assist with the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program during tax season.

United Cerebral Palsy – Music Therapy, Casual Day Opportunities—April 19th—April 28th- Pottery/Painting Gone Fishing’ - May 16th and 17th at Oak Mountain Park Organizing/Labeling Sewing/Crocheting and many more Opportunities.

United Community Center- Organize and distribute food to needy families. Light clerical duties. Check on seniors well being.

V.A. Medical Center – Information desk and greeter. Light clerical duties. Visit patients and deliver new admission kits/reading material. Make customer service calls.

VITAS Innovative Hospice Care – Respite for caregivers. Engage in activities and craft.

Yellow Dot/Positive Maturity – Sign up participants in the car safety Yellow Dot Program.

Youth Serve, Inc. – Mentor youth, Teach social service and civics curriculum to youth.
