The Senior Companion Program
helps ill, homebound, seniors continue to live independently
for as long as possible in their own homes. The seniors
and their caregivers find this to be less stressful
as well as helping them to save money on the cost
of a nursing home
Senior Companions, as their name
implies, provides companionship for a homebound
senior and respite for their caregiver. Companionship
may simply consist of visiting with a senior, reading
them a book or their mail, or helping them with
their medications. Companions may also perform light
housekeeping like washing the laundry or preparing
meals. In almost all cases, the companion and the
senior form a strong bond of friendship.
To be a senior companion, an
individual must be age 60+ and have an income no more
than approximately $12,000 a year. Companions serve
as a volunteer for up to twenty (20) hours a week
and receive a small stipend of $2.65 per hour. The
program charges no fee for its services.
