"20 years ago they asked if I knew how to answer a phone, file, work an adding machine, and how fast I typed."

  • Today, they want employees to understand about computers (how to turn them on, connect to their servers, telecommute, and fix simple problems). It's required that employees know different word-processing programs, spreadsheets, and databases.  Employees are also required to know about computer-based phone systems, cell phones, how to fax over the internet, and how to Skype.

  • Today, you need to have a minimum of 3 social networks to learn about opportunities, receive endorsements, and make connections.

"25 years ago when I wanted to find a job I purchased a newspaper and circled ads, called the employer, made an appointment, then dropped off my application or resume."

  • Today there are over 200 employment websites.  Most of them require the application to register with the website before they can even view opportunities with the company. Employers do not typically accept phone calls, applications are filled out online, and resumes must be uploaded before you can be considered.
  • Today's employers want a one-page resume that shows lifetime achievements and it MUST stand out.

"20 years ago interviews were personal. I dressed for the occasion and employers educated me about their business. I was able to tell them about me, my past work experience, and my family."

  • Today, some interviews are held on the computer, over the internet.  You are expected to have "Googled" the business, potential supervisors, and coworkers, because chances are, they have already researched you.
