Retired and Senior Volunteer Program 

Volunteer Opportunities

UAB Highlands (SPOONS) – Assist patients and families on the ACE (Acute Care for Elders) unit during

            mealtimes. Help ranges from feeding a patient to encouraging them to eat.

A.M.Brown – Assist with cultural programs and provide grounds maintenance and beautification.

Alabama Veterans Memorial Park – Greet and direct visitors. Help with special events.

Alacare Home Health & Hospice – Call to talk and check on hospice patients. Provide respite for

            Caregivers. Light clerical duties.

Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama – Participate in special events throughout the year (Walk/Run in Nov., Night

 golf tournament, Candle Lighting Service, Thanksgiving Arbor)

American Diabetes Association – Assist with periodic mail-outs and special events.

American Red Cross – Register and assist with blood drives. Help with disaster relief and

community education.

AWARE Program – Make follow-up calls to clients looking for employment to determine their

            progress in finding a job. Teach a 1 hour Microsoft WORD computer class once a week.

Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum-Help during special museum events, work during races and throughout

             the year. Volunteers are needed to oversee and help direct visitors through self tour.

Better Basics – Reading activities with 2nd and 4th graders in participating Birmingham and Jefferson County

 schools. Assist during the annual 1-day “Birmingham Reads” event.

Birmingham Airport – Greeter “Ambassador” to help travelers navigate the airport terminal.

Birmingham Children’s Theatre – Usher children in/out of performances. Help with seating.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute – Greet visitors/assist with exhibits/conduct tours.

Birmingham Museum of Art – Greeters at the galleries and information desk. Tour guides.

Birmingham Urban League – Answer the phone and light clerical duties.

Children’s Hospital – Volunteer as a Greeter (Greet and take visitors to appropriate locations),

Nursing Ambassador-(assisting the nurses on an assigned floor with keeping kitchen area clean and stocked and assisting the children with baths, dressing, feeding and companionship. Patient Pal- (working with the children in the waiting area), and tutors.

Christian Service Mission – Volunteers may work sorting (items that are donated), community

gardens(helping to facilitate and cultivate gardens in assigned community) construction (helping trained professional build or repair houses) and tutoring (working in assigned schools with students in a reading program)

Crisis Center UWCA – Trained as a “counselor” to take calls from people in crisis.

Easter Seals of Birmingham – Answer phones, greet/direct visitors (Monday is the most needed day).

Help with special events.

Fox 6 Call for Action/WBRC – Take initial calls from individuals to document/resolve problems.

Gentiva/Odyssey Hospice – Make “tuck-in” calls to clients for the weekend. Light clerical


Greater Birmingham Ministries – Food and clothing distribution to homeless.

JCCEO Adult Day Health Care – Call seniors in the community to check on their well-being

Jefferson Co. Council on Aging – Meals on Wheels driver.

Jefferson County EMA – Participate in Community Awareness Day event in October.

Jefferson County Jail – Literacy tutoring and GED preparation with adults.

Keep Birmingham Beautiful – Trained to conduct seminars on: environmental awareness,

            beautification and recycling. Help with mail-outs. Distribute supplies/souvenirs.

Lovelady Center – Mentor or tutor women/children.

McCoy Older Adult Day Care – Visit and assist clients with daily activities. Volunteering doing arts and crafts

 with clients.

McWane Science Center – Assist with exhibits (behind the scenes or out with the public).

            Help with homeschool classes.

My Father’s House-Commit to mentor and support foster care/dependency youth.

Norwood Resource Center Light office duties- answering the phones, greeting the guests, assisting with the

 application process also nightly closing of the facility. Volunteers may help with the community

 gardens in the Norwood Community.

Pathways- Help with sorting and organizing at the Southside location and help with serving lunch to women

 and children at the downtown location.

Senior Talk Line UWCA – Call homebound seniors from the United Way building to check on

            their status

Sloss Furnace – Light clerical work. Help in bookstore. Give tours on Saturday afternoons. Volunteers with

              legal background needed to help interpret contacts.

St. Vincent’s East – Clerical duties. Patient education.

United Community Center – Organize and distribute food  to needy families. Light clerical duties. Telephone

               seniors to check on their well-being

United Way of Central Alabama – Light clerical duties. Assist with the VITA (Volunteer Income

            Tax Assistance) program during tax season.

V.A. Medical Center – Information desk and greeter. Light clerical duties. Visit patients and

            deliver new admission kits/reading material. Make customer service calls.

VITAS Innovative Hospice Care – Respite for caregiver and light clerical duties and companionship with

 Hospice patients.

Washington Elementary School – Mentor and tutor children.

Yellow Dot/Positive Maturity – Sign up participants in the car safety Yellow Dot Program.

Youth Serve, Inc. – Mentor youth. Teach social service and civics curriculum to youth.

YWCA My Sister’s Closet – Sort donated clothing and other items and tag for sale in the store.

Birmingham Municipal Court – Greet and direct visitors and light clerical duties.

Disability Rights and Resources – Help build ramps for people with disabilities. Building

            materials provided.

Triumph Services, Inc. – Clerical duties at front desk (Tuesday mornings 9am – 12:30pm).
