Current Volunteer Opportunities
UAB Highlands (SPOONS) – Assist patients and families on the ACE (Acute Care for Elders) unit during meal times. Help ranges from feeding a patient to encouraging patients to eat.
A.H. Parker High School – Mentor high school students/Greet and direct visitors through the school.
A.M.Brown – Assist with cultural programs/Grounds maintenance
Alabama Veterans Memorial Park – Greet and direct visitors. Help with special events.
Alacare Home Health & Hospice – Call to talk and check on hospice patients. Provide respite forcaregivers. Administrative duties.
Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama – Participate in this organizations special events throughout the year (Walk/Run in Nov., Night golf tournament, Candle Lighting Service, Thanksgiving Arbor).
American Cancer Society – Assist with clerical duties.
American Diabetes Association – Assist with periodic mail-outs.
American Red Cross – Register and assist with blood drives. Help with disaster relief.
AWARE Program – Make follow-up calls to clients looking for employment to determine their progress in finding a job. Teach a 1 hour Microsoft WORD computer class once a week.
Better Basics – Reading activities with 4th and 2nd graders in participating Birmingham and Jefferson County schools.
Birmingham Airport – Greeter “Ambassador” to help travelers navigate the terminal.
Birmingham Children’s Theatre – Usher children in/out of performances. Help with seating.
Birmingham Civil Rights Institute – Greet visitors/assist with exhibits/conduct tours.
Birmingham Museum of Art – Greeters at the galleries. Tour guides.
Birmingham Urban League – Answer the phone and light clerical duties.
Cahaba Heights Senior Gardens/New Merkle – Assist during lunchtime at the center.
Children’s Hospital – Take activity cart around to children’s rooms. Assist at information desk.
Christian Service Mission – Answer phone and light clerical duties. Participate in special events throughout the year.
Crisis Center – Trained as “counselor” to take calls from people in crisis.
Easter Seals of Birmingham – Answer phones and greet/direct visitors.
Exceptional Foundation – Assist in activities with clients and participate in field trips.
Fox 6 Call for Action/WBRC – Take initial calls from individuals to document problems.
Gentiva/Odyssey Hospice – Make “tuck-in” calls to clients for the weekend. Light clerical duties.
Greater Birmingham Ministries – Food and clothing distribution to homeless.
Jefferson Co. Council on Aging – Meals on Wheels driver.
Jefferson County EMA – Participate in Community Awareness Day event in October.
Jefferson County Jail – Literacy tutoring with adults.
Jefferson Co. Office of Senior Citizens – Help seniors enroll and understand Medicare plans and benefits. Attend health fairs. Data entry. Light clerical duties.
Keep Birmingham Beautiful – Trained to conduct seminars on: environmental awareness, beautification, recycling. Help with mail-outs. Distribute supplies/souvenirs.
Lovelady Center – Mentor or tutor women/children. Help with grounds, housekeeping or kitchen.
McCoy Older Adult Day Care – Visit and assist clients with activities. Help with events/fundraising. Light clerical duties.
McWane Science Center – Assist with exhibits (behind the scenes or out with the public). Help with homeschool classes.
Norwood Resource Center – Assist with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Help with Neighborhood Garden Plot maintenance. Administrative/Receptionist duties.
Senior Talk Line UWCA – Call homebound seniors from the United Way building to check on their status and visit with them.
St. Vincent’s East – Clerical duties. Patient education.
United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham – Assist in taking clients to area stores for shopping.
United Way of Central Alabama – Light clerical duties. Assist with the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program during tax season.
V.A. Medical Center – Information desk and greeter. Light clerical duties. Visit patients anddeliver new admission kits/reading material. Make customer service calls.
VITAS Innovative Hospice Care – Respite for caregivers.
Washington Elementary School – Mentor and tutor children.
Yellow Dot/Positive Maturity – Sign up participants in the Yellow Dot Program.
Youth Serve, Inc. – Mentor youth.
YWCA My Sister’s Closet – Sort donated clothing and other items and tag for sale in the store.
Birmingham Municipal Court – Greet and direct visitors. Customer service duties.
Disability Rights and Resources – Help build ramps for people with disabilities. Building materials provided.
Triumph Services, Inc. – Clerical duties at front desk (Tuesday mornings 9am – 12:30pm).
